KNOWLEDGE & PERSPECTIVES

Making water part of the cotton conversation

Why water-use efficiency belongs at the centre of the research agenda.

A shared resource

Water scarcity and inefficient water use are among the challenges identified in the ICRC concept. Research into irrigation and water management is therefore a proposed priority.

Beyond a single technology

The proposed direction combines water-management practices, variety evaluation, soil health and digital decision support. These areas can be studied together in relevant growing conditions.

From trials to practice

Field testing and demonstration are important parts of the proposed pathway. Practical approaches would need evaluation in the conditions where farmers are expected to use them.

The intended contribution

ICRC aims to support efficient resource use alongside productivity and profitability. Specific water-saving claims would require evidence from completed studies. No such results are claimed in this concept brief.
